Greetings from Kusumagiri Mental Centre!

We are delighted to share with you the activities and achievements of Kusumagiri Mental Health Centre (KMHC) during our recent Mental Health Week celebrations, culminating on World Mental Health Day 2025, with the theme: “Access to Services – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies,” resonated deeply with our mission to promote mental health and wellbeing and provide quality care. Below is a report highlighting our events and initiatives, along with some photos.

A brief report of mental health day observance

Kusumagiri Mental Health Centre, Cochin Kerala India, organized a one-week awareness program from October 4th to 10th, 2025, as part of World Mental Health Day observance.

  • October 4th: The Department of Social Work kick-started the mental health week with a workshop for interns (MSW, Psychology, BOT students) and inmates/caretakers of KMHC. Sr. Jessia, Ms. Shalini, Mr. Riyon, and Ms. Elizabeth led the sessions and activities, benefiting 75 participants.
  • October 6th:Dr.Kuruvila Thomas, Chief Psychiatrist, KMHC delivered a class on mental health emergencies and access to services for nursing staff at KMHC.
  • October 7th: A workshop on “Kangan Water” and its benefits on mental health and wellbeing was organized, highlighting its applications, around 80 people participated.
  • October 8th:An International Webinar on Mental Health and Wellbeing was held in association with Western Sydney University, Australia, and Brainwave Education and Training, UK. The webinar featured keynote addresses and speaker sessions.

  • Hon’ble Justice Mr. A MuhamedMustaque (Justice, High Court of Kerala), “Delivered Key note address”.
  • Dr. Kuruvilla Thomas (Chief Psychiatrist, KMHC), made a power point presentation on- “Can India be a Role Model in Mental Health Care”?
  • Ms. Rose Mary Qummoh (Lecturer, Western Sydney University) made a power point presentation on “Social Work Responses to Mental Health Needs in Forced Migration and Crisis Contexts”
  • Mr. Tomy Sebastian (Managing Director, Brainwave Education & Training, UK) – made a power point presentation on “Mental Health Social Work in the UK” followed by panel discussion, benefiting 120 participants.
  • October 9th: Dr.Dmple George made a power point presentation on the theme, “Access to Services- Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergenciesand the event was inaugurated by Mr. John Joshy, District Social Justice Officer, EKM. Sr. Divya MSJ(Provincial Superior, MSJ Nirmala Province) delivered Presidential address. Sr. Miriam MSJ, Administrator KMHC, extended a welcome address, Dr. Jaya Prakash, (Psychiatrist KMHC)delivered felicitation message and Dr.Kuruvila Thomas (Chief Psychiatrist) delivered the vote of thanks. After the public meeting and scientific session staff and students from different departments of KMHC performed variety of cultural programs.
  • October 10th: An outreach program was organized, including a rally to Family Health Centre, Kakkanad, to raise awareness about mental health in emergencies and catastrophes. Interns from KMHC performed Flash mob and Street play based on the theme. Dr. Victor Fernandes and Dr.Gopika (FHC) delivered an informative message with regards to world mental health day observance and the need of public awareness.

The week-long program was a huge success, with active participation from doctors, sisters, staff, students and interns from different departments.
