World Mental Health Day, acknowledged each year on 10th October, is an opportunity for everyone across the world to raise awareness about mental health and wellbeing. The day aims to get people talking and to reduce stigma and discrimination towards people living with mental health challenges and for their families and communities. The more we talk about our mental health and wellbeing, the more we can build resilience and reduce the social isolation and loneliness that many people are feeling.
This year the theme is focused on mental health services in times of catastrophes and emergencies, a very important topic, especially for people living here in the Pacific/Oceania region. Kindness and compassion towards ourselves and others, whilst recognising that we are all unique individuals, will help to support better health and wellbeing, reduce stigma and build connections and stronger communities. As Maya Angelou once said – My wish for you is that you continue. Continue to be who and how you are, to astonish a mean world with your acts of kindness.
